So, my recent slow down in productivity on this blog should not be seen by you all as my slipping into another period of depression related inactivity...marked by the watching of Charles In Charge reruns, and the consumption of coma inducing quantities of pad thai.
I'm actually (gasp) quite busy artistically...which is a damn good feeling. So much so that this posting will simply be a collage of fragmented odds and ends, until which time that I can discuss sports, life, music and faith in greater depth.
*Recorded a demo with the 'potential'. Hearing someone's voice on tape is pretty much the last step in believing that someone might be able to sing your songs. Considering I had the same singer since I was 17, this is a hard leap to take. Hopefully what the recordings reveal will be the match that starts a new fire. I'll hear them in earnest on Thursday. BTW I'm leaning towards The Haunted Hearts over The Secret History now...though I have been threatening to start a nautical folk group called The Sparrows, and a ska band called The Sicilian Lions instead. I think those last two threats are more wishful thinking/fantasizing. Still if anyone wants to vote for HH or SH, or even more interestingly...suggest a name for this new project, well that would be swell. If by some stroke of fate I use it, well I'll devise a suitable reward.
*watched the Yankees opening day victory yesterday afternoon in my local pub The Brogue, because I don't have cable television. It was only me and and an old German dude drinking O'douls and talking to me about soccer. The pub is going down hill though, and I may need to change 'my local'. No more Smithwicks on tap, no more Tat-O brand shrimp cocktail flavored crisps. No crisps period. Drank a skanky Harp's. It didn't matter, Derek Jeter hit a dramatic 3 run homerun in the bottom of the 8th. Lovely. I decided I shan't be ashamed of my Yankees anymore. I've loved them since I got a Thurman Munson tumbler in the drive through at McDonalds as a tiny tyke in 1978. I suffered through some sketchy teams in the 80s. Rooting for the Yankees isn't any more like rooting for Haliburton than rooting for Manchester United is. In fact it may actually be less so. So go tell Morrissey and a bunch of skinheads that they can't root for their idols. I dare ya! Two words. Joe Dimaggio.*Went to a signing/q & a for the new Harvey Pekar graphic novel called Ego & Hubris; The Michael Malice Story. Michael Malice is a chum of mine, whose help in writing my young adult novel was indispensable. The book is
Harvey's brilliant retelling of Michael's life story and is available from Ballantine Books. Plus you get to see My Favorite rendered as cartoon characters (which critics may say is redundant), which is sort of cool. I strongly suggest getting it....*have a small role in an short independent movie which is shooting this weekend in my apartment. I play a slightly conflicted man of the cloth. Typecasting rears its ugly head. I don't know my lines yet though. Better finish up and work on that...
Anyway, all for now....hope everyone is feeling a bit of sun on their face....
